Bill Fertig, director of United Spinal’s Resource Center was recently elected to the Executive Council of the North American Spinal Cord Injury Consortium (NASCIC) which brings about unified achievements in research, care, cure and policy by supporting collaborative efforts across the spinal cord injury community.

“We are delighted to have Bill join the NASCIC Executive Council as a member delegate representative.  His expertise in leading the United Spinal SCI Resource Center will be very valuable as we work to enhance our communication and membership strategies as well as share engagement resources across our community,” said Kim Anderson-Erisman, PhD, president of the North American SCI Consortium.

Fertig, who served twenty-five years as a municipal police officer and training sergeant, was spinal cord injured in an off-duty motorcycle accident in 1999.

“I am humbled and honored to be voted onto the Executive Committee of the North American SCI Consortium for 2019 on behalf of United Spinal Association and our members. My goal is to help support the mission of NASCIC by both leveraging United Spinal’s large and ever-growing SCI network as well as drawing upon my own experiences in now my 20th year of living with paraplegia,” said Fertig.

As director of United Spinal’s Resource Center, Fertig brings his breadth of experiences and personal success living with spinal cord injury to help support wheelchair users and other individuals with disabilities who reach out to the organization for assistance.

United Spinal’s Resource Center team fields over 5,000 inquiries annually from wheelchair users including paralyzed veterans and the greater disability community of family members, medical professionals, case managers and others. The Spinal Cord Resource Center team members have a combined 80 years of experience living successfully with SCI.

Fertig also serves as both a general peer mentor to others living with spinal cord injuries and disorders as well as an employment mentor to those interested in returning to employment.

The NASCIC brings together like-minded organizations, individuals, and groups to improve research, care, and policies impacting people living with spinal cord injury, their families, and community.

The organization forms relationships and actively engages individuals and organizations representing spinal cord injury, including United Spinal, and exchanges valid, trustworthy, and useful information, experience, and knowledge.

It also promotes best practices of consumer engagement in research, care, and policy as well as the creation of a unified platform for SCI advocacy in North America.
